2014 Conformation Judge - Nancy Talbot (USA)

Nancy Talbot

Believe it or not, I fell in love with Golden Retrievers when I was 4 years old. A family moved into our neighborhood with two Golden Retrievers, who won the hearts of every child on the block. I decided then that I would someday have one of these dogs. When I was a college student, in 1976, I made my first purchase of a purebred Golden, and as luck would have it she had hip dysplasia and horrible allergies. Lesson learned, I spayed her and got her CDX obedience title. I accepted this first experience as a learning opportunity, and went in search of my second Golden.
Three years later I did find my second start, and he became Am/Can CH Beckwith’s Zwierig Sunshader, UD, WCX, Can CDX, Group placing dog. I will forever be thankful to Shader’s breeders for entrusting such a wonderful puppy to a graduate student with nothing to recommend her except enthusiasm.

In the years that have followed, I am proud to have bred many CH, UD, JH, WCX, and other working titled Goldens. Included in these are specialty winners, high in trial winners, and Golden Retriever Club of America Outstanding Producers. I added Labrador Retrievers to my dog family in 1987. In addition to Goldens and Labradors, I have owned CH Papillons, Pugs, and a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. My home is currently shared with 8 dogs, four of them over the age of 12 years.

In real life, I have been in public education for 33 years. I have taught Special Education (Blind and Low Vision) as well as all grades 1st through 8th. I currently am a Special Education Administrator.
I was licensed to judge Goldens in 1991, and added Labs two years later. Among the judging honors I have experienced are: the Golden Retriever Club of America National Specialty (2001 and 2009); the Golden Retriever Club of Canada National Specialty (three times, the latest in 2010); the Swedish Labrador Retriever Club and Swedish Spaniel and Retriever Club (2012); the Korean Retriever Owners Club, as well as two other trips to judge Goldens in South Korea; the Indonesia Kennel Club (Goldens and Labradors); and over 50 local and regional specialties in both breeds in the USA and Canada.

I consider it a privilege to be able to serve my breeds in that capacity.
Over the years I have been involved with many dog clubs. I am currently President of the Golden Retriever Foundation, a true opportunity to give back to the breed that I have loved for 36 years. I have also served as both a Board member and 1st Vice President of the Golden Retriever Club of America, of which I am a Life Member. I have been rescue chair for two Golden clubs, and have sat as President, Secretary, and Board member of all breed, Golden and Labrador clubs.

2014 Property Classes & Sweepstakes Judge - Peter Pickard (UK)

Peter Pickard

My first entry into the dog world began at 17yrs of age when I started showing my first dog, a GSD, in obedience shows in the UK and I have had a wonderful life- time connection to the dog scene ever since. I had GSD’s for many years until the mid-1970’s when my wife and I decided to change to Golden Retrievers having seen what wonderful temperaments they had; such beautiful looking dogs who were and remain so great with the family! I was fortunate in being able to obtain pups from the well-known Westley and Styal kennels and over the years was able to get all the advice and guidance anyone could wish for from Joan Gill, Daphne and Mervyn Phillpot (Westley) and Hazel Hinks (Styal) whose combined knowledge of the breed was unsurpassed. Over the years I owned, showed and bred several champions under the Papeta prefix with the most notable probably being Irish and UK Ch. Papeta Philosopher who was best of breed at Crufts and who features on many pedigrees of Goldens here in Australia.

With some restriction placed on me by work responsibilities I started judging open shows in the UK in 1981 and judged over twenty such shows before qualifying to award Challenge Certificates by the UK Kennel Club in 1993. (I am also on the UK GRC A1 list). I went on to judge several championship shows with entries of over 200 (for one sex!) – All this was to change of course with the financial crisis which was to hit the UK.

My wife and I came to live in Australia three years ago to join other family members and have now renewed our interest in Goldens by joining the SA GRC. Having been so impressed by the quality of the Goldens we have now obtained two great pups who are causing the usual havoc around the home we have set up in the Adelaide hills. I am looking forward to visiting the Victoria show and to meet fellow enthusiasts.
